A few weekends ago Gary and I both had Saturday off (a rare occurrence these days it seems) and decided to do a little Los Angeles bakery tour. We visited new places as well as old favorites, and by the end of the day we were absolutely stuffed! Of the many stops we took, one was Bouchon Bakery in Beverly Hills. We hardly ever have a reason to be in that area so this little shop is a rare treat. I actually think we go to Bouchon in Las Vegas more often! Gary was the one who introduced me to Thomas Keller; before that I don't think I'd ever heard of him. He is no doubt Gary's absolute favorite/most highly regarded chef so it wasn't long before I was a fan of their sweets. Also, have you checked out their latest cookbook of the same name? I could seriously pore over that tome for days on end. On our most recent visit we ordered a modest number of items, for two people at least!
Boston Cream Donut - A seriously gourmet donut (perhaps I should call it a doughnut instead). Perfectly fried (see Gary's picture here), the most rich and decadent vanilla custard filling, and topped off with delicious, high quality chocolate. No waxy chocolate glaze here!
Canele - Prior to this I'd never had one before. It was crisp and custardy just like I imagined, but after watching this video I have to admit I'm slightly disappointed I didn't have the same experience. Oh well, just means I'll have to try more in the name of "research"!
TKO (Thomas Keller Oreo) - This was one of the first things I've ever had at Bouchon (at the Venetian). Without a doubt it is the best sandwich cookie I've ever had. I can't really describe how perfect it is without sounding like a broken record. Rich, buttery chocolate sable cookie filled with the smoothest white chocolate ganache.
Kouign Amann - Whoa! It's almost like a croissant on steroids - flaky buttery laminated dough with an added heaping of sugar that melts to the bottom and creates a crispy caramelized crust. The most intense kouign amann I've ever tasted.
As you can tell, Bouchon Bakery does not mess around. It's definitely one of my favorite bakeries in LA, so if you're ever in town you must visit! And maybe bring me something as a thank you ;)
